Gorillas in the Mist Movie Review - Common Sense Media
1. Brainstorm a list of facts that they know about gorillas and to what sources they attribute their current knowledge.
2. Identify the ways in which technologies are being integrated into conservation by reading and discussing “Tracking Gorillas and Rebuilding a Country.”
3. Create a diagram illustrating and explaining the technologies used in monitoring and tracking the habitat of the mountain gorilla.
4. Write a one-page mini-report highlighting the function and benefits of a tracking or imaging technology.

4. WRAP-UP/HOMEWORK: After completing his or her illustration, each student chooses one of the five technologies mentioned in the article to investigate in greater depth. Students may want to use a local library, encyclopedia, or the Internet to search for more information on their topic. Each student should write a one page summary of his or her technology and integrate this information with his or her diagram by attaching it to the bottom or publishing the information on the poster itself. Students should include the following information in their research (written on the board for students to copy prior to leaving class):
-the type of technology being investigated
-how this technology functions
-various ways this technology is used by people (scientific, military, civilian, recreational, etc.)
-how this technology is helping scientists in their research of gorillas and their habitat
In a future class, students should display their diagrams and present what they learned about the technologies they investigated.

Further Questions for Discussion:
–What are some animals that you are aware of being endangered? What are the threats to the survival of these species?
–Why do you think people are interested in poaching gorillas? Why are other animals often victims of poachers?
–What benefits are there to a government having a detailed digital survey of every square meter of the country?
–Which countries do you think have access to the technology to fully survey the area of that country?
–What other uses can you imagine for aerial digital imaging technology?
–What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Rwandan government having this system used in their country?
